Thirtyish

Terms of use

You're thirtyish and you know nobody reads these. Here is the short version, in the order that matters.

This is a calculator and an explanation. It is not advice.

I don't know your situation, so nothing here is a recommendation about what you personally should do.

Everything on this site is general information. It tells you how the rules work and what the arithmetic produces for the figures you enter. It does not tell you whether to overpay, whether to worry, or what to do about your money — those depend on things this site knows nothing about: your other debts, your savings, your job security, your plans, your family.

If you want a recommendation tailored to you, that's what a qualified financial adviser is for, and it's a different thing from what this is.

The figures are estimates, and the future is genuinely unknown

The maths is checked. The assumptions behind it are guesses, and small changes to them move the answer a long way.

Any projection running thirty or forty years forward depends on things nobody can know: what you'll earn, what inflation does, whether the rules change. They will change — the repayment threshold, the interest formula and the write-off period have all been altered by governments before and can be again.

So treat every long-range number here as an illustration of what would happen if, not a prediction. Where an assumption is doing the heavy lifting, the assumptions and limitations page says which one and how much it matters.

I try hard to be right and I don't guarantee it

Figures are checked against legislation and GOV.UK, and I still can't promise the site is accurate, current or complete.

The rules change every April and sometimes in between. There may be errors. Nothing on this site is warranted, and it's provided as it is.

Please don't make an irreversible financial decision on the strength of a free web calculator alone — this one or anyone else's. Check anything important against your own loan statement, GOV.UK, or someone qualified.

If you find something wrong, tell me. [email protected]. I'd rather fix it than defend it, and corrections get made and acknowledged.

What I'm not liable for

Losses from relying on the site, so far as the law allows me to say so.

I'm not liable for any loss or damage arising from using this site or relying on anything on it, including where the information turns out to be wrong or out of date.

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow to be limited. Those exclusions apply whatever the rest of this page says.

The site may be down, and may change

No promises about availability, and pages get rewritten when the rules do.

The site can be changed, suspended or withdrawn at any time. Every April the figures are updated, and older explanations may be rewritten or removed.

Advertising, and what I don't take money for

The site is paid for by display advertising. There are no affiliate links and I take no commission from anyone.

Ads are served by a third-party network. I don't choose the individual advertisers, don't endorse them, and have no relationship with them. An ad appearing next to an explanation is not a recommendation of the advertiser.

I don't accept payment for sending you to a lender, broker, insurer or investment platform, and there are no affiliate or referral links anywhere on the site. If that ever changes it will be disclosed plainly, on this page and on the relevant page.

The words and the code are mine

Read it, quote it, link to it. Don't republish it wholesale.

The content and the calculator are my copyright. You're welcome to read it, print it for yourself, and quote a short extract with a link back. Copying pages, or scraping the site to reproduce it elsewhere, isn't permitted.

Links to other sites are for convenience. I'm not responsible for what's on them.

The legal bits

English law, English and Welsh courts.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes go to the courts of England and Wales.

Using the site means accepting these terms. If you don't, please don't use it.
